The Lambton Sundial was created in 2007/8  and is located on the Lambton Estate near Chester -le -Street in County Durham. The picture above was taken  just as it was completed , before the grass has had chance to grow , and before we planted all the new trees and shrubs.

Still waiting for picture in full bloom !

The Sundial is laid out over a tapering spiral earth mound over 120 metres long. The hour markers are monolithic sandstone , the tallest over 3 metres. The Gnomon , which casts the suns shadow , is constructed from recycled railway track and is over 50ft tall.

It is the work of sculptor Ray Brooks , commissioned by Lambton Developments  Ltd. under a "Percentage for Art" project , as part of a new development on the estate, where a range of old farm building have been sensitively transformed into beautiful modern business units.

Please explore this site - why and how the dial was created - a selection of pictures -but also feel free to visit the Sundial itself - it is openly accessible and free.
